NFTS and Left Bank Pictures Launch UK Writers Program

The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is teaming up with Left Bank Pictures to launch a new writers development program in the UK. Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind popular Netflix series “The Crown,” will collaborate with NFTS to create an immersive and collaborative environment for aspiring screenwriters.

Set to launch in March 2024, this program will replace NFTS’s former diverse writers development initiative. The aim of the program is to provide opportunities for underrepresented writers from diverse backgrounds to develop their skills and create commercially viable television drama concepts. A total of six screenwriters will be chosen to participate in the intensive 10-week program, which will include paid positions.

Throughout the course, the selected writers will work on developing and pitching four full series ideas. With the guidance and support of industry professionals, they will learn about the creative and business aspects of television production. This program not only focuses on nurturing emerging writing talents but also aims to bring diverse voices to the forefront of the industry.

According to NFTS Director Jon Wardle, the collaboration with Left Bank Pictures is an opportunity to pave the way for diverse storytelling and ensure that the stories depicted on screen reflect the vibrant and varied world we live in. The program aims to discover and nurture talented writers from across the UK and provide them with the tools and support necessary to thrive in the industry.

In other related news, the Dutch sales agent Incredible Film has acquired global distribution rights for the film “The Forgotten Battle,” starring Tom Felton from the “Harry Potter” franchise. The film, directed by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen, tells the story of three individuals from different backgrounds whose lives become intertwined during World War II. Their paths converge during the Battle of Walcheren Causeway in 1944, highlighting the choices they make for the sake of freedom.

“The Forgotten Battle” has already premiered on Netflix in multiple territories and will be showcased on the Incredible Film slate at MIPCOM. Distribution rights for various regions, including the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, and German-speaking Europe, have been sold to Dolphin Medien. Additionally, Media Squad in Slovakia has acquired the rights for Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia.

These recent developments in the film and television industry demonstrate the commitment to promoting diverse voices and bringing unique stories to the screen. With initiatives like the NFTS and Left Bank Pictures writers program and the distribution deals for “The Forgotten Battle,” the industry is taking steps to ensure inclusivity and the exploration of untold narratives.
